When it comes to self care, Men of Courage is intentional about supporting the mental well being of black men. The pressures we encounter on a daily basis can take a toll both mentally an physically. That’s why it is so important that we take time to unplug and recharge from time to time.
At the Men of Courage pop-up event held at the Ford Resource and Engagement Center on March 10th, we explored some effective ways in which black men can healthily recharge and distress.
Check Out These 5 Tips for Self Care
1.Get Away. For men, vacation is often seen as an opportunity to turn up, kick back, and have a good time. Next time you’re planning a trip, consider switching the focus of your vacation to a spiritual retreat where you center yourself, meditate, and focus on what you have, what you need, and what you want your future to be.
2. Be Fit, Physically and Mentally. Physical fitness is very important especially for those in an active line of work like police officers. Blow off some steam at the gym and watch your mood change. Go on a nature hike. Take deep breaths, sit still, and be quiet. Taking mental breaks can help get you throughout a rough day.
3. Give More Than You Receive It’s important to give back. As black men its even more important to reach back and help pull another young brother up. Through mentorship and giving time to various organizations including those focused on young black men like BINGO and Detroit PAL we can make a difference. Find a local organization or mentee to give your time and expertise to. They will appreciate it.
Today we had the opportunity to share with young Kings at West Village Academy. We discussed purpose, goals, overcoming distractions, and most importantly the attributes of a King! We practiced today! Shoutout to my brother @imsojreed for coming through and sharing your mentee with us. Shoutout to my bro @gocrazyton for sharing your experiences with the young men. Lastly, shoutout to my brother @jdee313 for sharing his story. #Godsplan #motivation #education #educator #inspiration #detroit #blackexcellence #inspire #educatedblackmen #mentor #menofcourage
4. Environment. Let your environment reflect peace and tranquility. De-clutter busy spaces. Remove drama and drama-filled people from around you. Mind the narratives and images you ingest. When you come home from a long day of work have a routine to wind down. This will help develop boundaries and work-life balance.
We are the stories we tell ourselves or the stories we adopt about ourselves. If you go through life telling yourself you are a victim you will become a victim. If you tell yourself that you are a victor you will become victorious. Stop allowing the media and well meaning people to tell you that you are a victim. Take your destiny in your own hands and win. They told me I was a loser and I would never amount to anything, well we see how that worked out for them. #writingmywrongs #refusetolose #buildingthedream #letsgetit
5. Believe. If you believe in a higher power pray or maybe just start believing in yourself more. The power of believing will transfer to every area of your life. Trust me!
